The National Home of Your Own Alliance recognizes that acquiring and financing housing is but one facet of making a "home of your own" a reality for people with disabilities. However feasible home ownership may be, many individuals with disabilities will not be able to achieve their dream of having a home unless current public policies change. The basic aim of the state policy review is to identify the opportunities and barriers in current state policies that affect the ability of people with disabilities to lease or own their own homes.
The analysis considers four aspects of supporting people with disabilities to have a home of their own, including policies related to personal supports, income, housing and access. The state policy reviews offer both a succinct analysis of the effects of current policies on home ownership/leasing and concrete suggestions for policy changes that would increase opportunities for people to own their own homes. Policy reviews are now available for Idaho and Connecticut.
